Editor's note: The closure of the I-480 exit ramp to Dodge Street has been postponed until March 25 because of the blizzard conditions expected in Omaha on Wednesday, the Nebraska Department of Transportation announced Monday.
That east-west stretch of Interstate 480 that runs north of downtown is getting a makeover.
This week, the Nebraska Department of Transportation is launching a pair of projects totaling $22 million to repaint and renovate the I-480 bridge over the Missouri River and west to the 14th Street interchange.

Cars descend the westbound off-ramp from Interstate 480 to Dodge Street in Omaha. Starting Tuesday, the Nebraska Department of Transportation will close the ramp for painting and repairs for six weeks.
Work will start Tuesday with the closure of the westbound I-480 exit ramp to Dodge Street/U.S. Highway 6, said Barbara Gerbino-Bevins, district construction engineer for the Nebraska Department of Transportation. The closure is expected to continue for six weeks.

“Both these projects will affect the ramp going down to Dodge. They’re trying to coordinate that,” she said. “From the public eye, they’ll look like one project.”
The Missouri River bridge portion of the project is starting on the east side of the bridge, in Iowa. Work will continue from east to west through November 2026, with a break next winter.
Gerbino-Bevins said workers will paint the superstructure underneath the bridge deck and the girders that support it and make repairs. The painting won’t affect traffic, especially in the early stages where the bridge is very high over water.
Once work reaches the Nebraska side, she said, there may be some closures along Riverfront Drive and connected parking lots beneath the bridge.

Don’t expect a fancy-looking paint job. The bridge will be painted a basic brown.
“We did think about doing a nice blue, like the Mormon Bridge,” Gerbino-Bevins said. “But somebody had a problem with it.”
The closure of the Dodge Street ramp will allow repairs to the deck of the bridge that carries traffic to downtown Omaha. Motorists are advised to exit at 14th Street instead.
